Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What is an Evaluation?

A:  An Evaluation, via video chat; will give the trainer time to sit down with you and your dog and discuss your goals and expectations during training. We can begin to evaluate the personality of your dog and determine a training program designed to fit your individual dogs' needs. This is also time for you to give us a history of your dog: what their normal daily schedule is, what commands he/she already knows, and if there are any behavioral issues that need to be addressed (such as play biting, chewing furniture, potty training, aggressive tendencies with other dogs, people, pulling on the leash, barking out the window, unruly behavior towards house guests).  We can set up a plan together, and figure out what program will work best for you and your dog.

Q:How are Consultations/Evaluations Conducted?

A: Our Consultations/Evaluations are conducted through video chat via Skype or FaceTime platforms. Why? Because, our lead trainer was driving within our hour range to homes where families just wanted to meet her, or 'K9 Fulton' and had no interest in inquiring about Dog Training. This world is not the safest to be traveling to unknown destinations into unknown homes; especially for a woman. So, for the safety of our Lead trainer and her K9 Fulton; all consultations will be conducted over video chat. We can discuss everything we would in person, just online. She can meet your dog over video; see issues going on inside your home and recommend an appropriate program for you and your pup, all from the comfort of your house. To book a video chat consultation, please click the link below.

Q: How old should my puppy be to start obedience training?

A: Your Puppy can begin obedience between 8-16 weeks of age! They start learning the day you get them, but can receive confusing communication from your household and family members, causing bad habits to develop. Starting them out as soon as possible on obedience, can help your pet dog develop and grow with appropriate and mannerly behavior. We accept Puppies in Board and Train Programs around 6 months of age, but you can begin E-Training for puppy development at any time before dropping them off for a Board and Train. We also recommend our Puppy Raising Program; which is a 6 month Boarding program to kick start your puppy to success!

Q: How Quickly Will My Dog Learn?

A: Every Dog Learns at a different speed, just as every owner will have a different amount of questions to go over.  You will be offered individual private lessons after the Board and Train program, where you will be taught how to work through everything your dog learned here with us.  There is never an expected 'end date' on dog training, after Board and train you will be expected to help your dog through any issues after training.  Each dog completes and masters commands and behaviors at different rates. During our 30-day Board and Train program, our trainer will determine your dogs rate of learning and work to have him excel in all training areas according to what he likes to work for. A higher reward will get them working faster!

Q: Is my dog too old to be trained in obedience or to 'fix' a behavioral problem?
A: A dog is never too old to be trained. We have trained many older dogs who have shined in obedience training with our balanced training methods, they are trained out of behavioral issues such as pulling on the leash, barking, nipping, jumping, and aggression. The longer the dog has been allowed to behave in a particular manner, the longer the dog has conditioned himself to believe that is acceptable behavior. So, an older dog could be more difficult to train, specifically with behavioral issues.

Q: What is a Balanced Trainer?
A: A Balanced Trainer recognizes dog training is not a “one size fits all approach”.  Balanced trainers don’t limit their training skills to a pre-defined protocol or rules.  They set a training plan, which defines each dog as an individual. This gives the trainer the ability to respect each dog’s personalities, training needs, and goals.

Q: Will my dog remember me after 30-days?

A: Yes! Your dog will remember you after his/her boarding program. We are just the trainers; your dog will know you as mom or dad. Please visit our instagram page for reunion videos. Your dog will see this as a training vacation. Not only will he/she be getting trained, he will also be playing, having fun, and going on field trips. He will be well cared for and looking forward to your arrival at pick up.

Q: Why do you only take two Board & Train dogs per month?

A: As of right now, we are training two dogs per month out of our Lead Trainers home. She does not have room for more than this inside of her house.

Q: Do you Train Personal Protection Dogs or Working Dogs?

A: Not to the general Public, If you have inquiries about Police K9's in need of rehabilitation, SAR dogs, etc- Please contact Alicia our Lead Trainer through E-mail or by Phone.  Our personal K-9's have been trained through our company and you can see them on IG.

Q: Do you offer Sport Dog Training?

A: No.

What are your Training Methods?

We utilize healthy and humane forms of communication to enhance the learning process with the dog to either continue a behavior or to discontinue an unwanted behavior.

One form of communication is Reward, which lets the dog know that you appreciate his efforts and is seen as fun and motivation by the dog. Reward lets the dog know that this behavior is good, and should be continued, it can come in forms of physical praise (petting, massage), or verbal praise (happy up beat "good boy!" etc.), or Items such as tugs, toys, treats, a clicker,  & playtime etc. Rewarding your dog after marking the proper behavior is essential to bridging the gap in communication.

Another form of communication is Feedback, which is an instant and fair response to an unwanted behavior.  This is not a form of teaching or learning, and should not be a part of the process of learning. This simply gets the dog's attention and communicates to the dog: "stop what you're doing, and pay attention".  When the feedback is effective, fair, and timed properly with the unwanted behavior, it will cause the dog to discontinue the unwanted behavior.

Our ultimate goal is to reach a direct line of communication with your dog.  Each dog is treated individually according to their personality and pace that they learn in. Upon completion of a program, we like to see each dog leave with a sense of pride and see a relaxed smile on their face with a look of accomplishment in their eyes. We love Happy, Healthy, and Loyal Dogs.

OUR FAVORITE SAYING IS: "A TRAINED DOG, IS A NAKED DOG!" MEANING, A TRULY TRAINED DOG SHOULDN'T NEED ANY TRAINING TOOLS TO FOLLOW YOUR COMMANDS.  BUT, DURING THE TRAINING PROCESS SOME 'TRAINING TOOLS' ARE NEEDED TO ACCOMPLISH THIS 'NAKED' END RESULT!  EACH DOG IS FITTED WITH THEIR 'TRAINING TOOLS' ACCORDING TO THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OWNERS WISHES.

What Type of Training Tools are used During the Programs?

Keep in mind that your dog will not need all of them, and will probably only use one type of collar and a leashThere isn't a single tool on this list that we have not used on our own personal dogs.  You are welcome to meet our dogs, and watch us work with our own dogs using any of these tools before considering using them. Just let us  know!

Herm Sprenger Prong Collar: The prong collar may catch your eye and look like a medieval torture device, but if used correctly it will apply multiple pressures around the dogs neck to give feedback. It is NOT used to pull the dog, for 'pulling' on the leash, or to cause injury to the dog in any way.  This collar can work wonders for dogs who are large and powerful that have a strong resistance to skin sensitivity.  Prong collars are also used to give you 'Automatic steering' with your dog! Chain Training collars can be confusing for some owners because they have to refresh the collar or find a level of effectiveness, but by using a prong collar this turns your dog into an automatic instead of a manual stick shifter (in car terms).  A prong collar can be easier for the owner to understand and give you the upper hand by being able to give your dog effective feedback each time!

Clicker:  A clicker is a small handheld mechanical device that make a Clicking Noise.  This noise is used to mark a specific behavior, which is immediately paired with positive reinforcement.  The clicker serves essentially as a marker, and we may recommend this if you and your pup choose to move further than Basic Obedience.  We also recommend this for puppies and advanced training such as Service Dogs, and working dogs.  It is a lot of fun for children in your family to get involved with using the clicker, and build a stronger positive bond with your pups.

Remote/E-collar: I highly recommend transitioning to the use of an E-collar during one of the programs! I cannot speak more highly about using an E-collar. If the prong collar is automatic steering for your dog, consider the E-collar the (insert your favorite 'top of the line' automotive here) of training tools!  The remote, and the collar are both re-chargeable devices (no removable batteries that are a hassle to buy) and are both waterproof, so you can use them in the pool, at the beach, or in the rain! The collar delivers a 'pulse' to the dog, similar to a tens unit for a persons back.  Contrary to popular belief it DOES NOT send an electric shock to your dog.  I have tried all of the models of collars on the palm of my hand, and my thighs to the highest setting they offer. The 'Dogtra' models are what I use in my programs because they gradually increase in intensity by 1 digit increments, so there isn't a 'grey area' for your dog. 'Dogtra' also features a 'vibrate' feature which feels like a cell phone vibrate which can be used for deaf dogs, and can be used to call your dog back to you from far distances (they can tell the difference between the vibrate and a stimulation and what they both mean).  Some collars can go up to a 2 mile range, so they are great to use during/after an off-leash program. The remote collars are wonderful for people who are interested in delivering 'silent' feedback in public areas (without use of collar and leash), or for people who are wanting to control their dogs from the comfort of their couch! The goal with using the E-collar is to have the dog jumping for joy at the sight of it because they are so happy to put it on! Your dog will look forward to seeing the E-collar and enjoying the time you spend with him/her because it can give you peace of mind. Please let me know if you are interested in the remote collar training, and I will be more than happy to assist you with this transition!
